Bechaara 'Dil Bechaara'

Bechaara ‘Dil Bechaara’
(Helpless ‘Dil Bechaara’)

Sushant Singh Rajput’s latest and last movie - Dil Bechaara.

The sensationalizing suicide (or maybe murder) of this very young but talented actor- Sushant, had shocked the world to its very core. In the midst of this shocking reality came his latest but last movie - Dil Bechaara, co-starring Sanjana Sanghi and many other renowned and talented actors in supporting.

Here I’ve tried to review the movie (not allowing my biases to take the wheels while doing so). It might be harsh and I apologize if it hurts others feelings but the truth needs to be free.

If anything more pathetic than the untimely demise of Sushant could be, it would be the poor and incoherent remake of enchanting ‘Fault in Our Stars’ - Dil Bechaara.

Fault In Our Stars (or Dil Bechaara) revolves around Hazel Grace (Kizi Basu) who is sick of being sick, cancer patient and eventually meets Augustus Waters (Immanuel Rajnikant aka Manny) during a Cancer support group. They both embark on a journey to find the solitude-seeking writer (or singer). In between they found happiness in each other’s company, will power and never-ending love which even cancer fails to snatch away.   ….OKAY!

In the Bollywood Remaking of this heartwarming movie, the Film Directors and producers got so immersed in Indianizing the movie along with its story line that the core essence and coherency got somewhat dissipated.

Firstly the movie suffers from the typical Bollywood’s ‘Flirt till accept’ syndrome where Manny relentlessly flirts with Kizie despite her impassiveness and magically she reciprocates his feelings. Unlike ‘Fault in Our Stars’ where both the protagonists show interests (although a little) in each other.

Secondly, the movie centers Kizie’s interest in the mysterious singer- Veer Abhimanyu and she was the one who insisted Manny to give his songs a try and eventually Manny also got interested in him. However, both the characters fail to reveal their interest in the mysteriousness and awe-striking Song of that singer. Unlike ‘Fault in Our stars’ where both the leads present and discuss their own point of views and favorites from the Book of the same mysterious writer.

However, I would say their efforts are praiseworthy in indianiazing the movie as it is highly unrealistic in a country like India where Parents are much concerned with their children’s health but still unable to let go their societal norms regarding virginity and all. In one of the scenes where kizie’s mother is concerned for her trip to Paris with Manny not only because of her health but also because of her concern regarding her daughter’s virginity.

In conclusion, Sanjana Sanghi’s acting was nice, not highly applaudable but definitely appreciable. Supporting actor Sahil Vahid acting as manny Best friend was jovial. Saif Ali Khan’s cameo as the mysterious singer was impactful but without any context. Sushant Singh Rajput playing Happy-go-lucky Manny was his typical bollywood role, however his character grasped depth and integrity in the second half of the movie revealing his true and talented potential.

At last, Dil bechaara failed to reveal the depth of a great story due to inadequate cinematography and cliché bolywoodness.

In my opinion, Sympathy for the actor shouldn't be confused with the direction of the film...
